RM of Souris Valley’s story
The Rural Municipality of Souris Valley No. 7 incorporated on December 13, 1909. It lies in the southeast of the province, right along the United States border, across from Divide County in North Dakota. Its unincorporated communities include Bromhead, Hoffer, Oungre, Ratcliffe and Tribune, and the RM office is in Oungre.
One of the best-known places in the municipality began with a homesteader. Frank Foster planted a grove of trees on his land in 1908. The Fosters left the area in 1926 after Frank's death, but the spot stayed known as Foster's Grove and became the setting for annual sports days and picnics. The RM bought the grove in 1942, built a bandstand there in 1946 and put up a cenotaph in 1947.
In 1963 the grounds became Oungre Memorial Regional Park, on the south bank of Long Creek. Over the years it gained a golf course in 1967, a swimming pool in 1969, the Souris Valley Communiplex in 1984 and an 18-hole mini golf course in 1985. Today the park offers a campground, a nine-hole sand green golf course, ball diamonds, disk golf and a community centre, while the Communiplex houses an indoor pool, an arena and a restaurant.
